Adroit Prizes for Poetry and Prose

This prize is awarded every year to two secondary or graduate students. Submissions only allow for six poems that are ten pages each and single-spaced, and/or three works of prose that have a combined word count of at most 3,500 words. The winners will receive a $200 prize as well as their work featured in the Adroit Journal.

Bennington Young Writers Awards

The Bennington Young Writers Awards is a free contest for writers in high school. There are three genres of writing you can submit: fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. In each category, there are 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places that are selected. They will receive $1000, $500, and $250 respectively; as well as become eligible for a scholarship of up to $10,000 a year.

Columbia College Chicago Young Authors Writing Competition

Only high school students are allowed to submit. Genres for submission include poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. Winners of this competition can receive cash prizes.

Leonard Milberg ‘53 High School Poetry Prize

This contest is for Juniors in high school. The submissions are judged by poets in the Princeton University creative writing faculty. First place winners will receive a $1500 prize, Second place winners will receive a $750 prize, and third place will receive a $500 prize.

Patricia Grodd Poetry Prize

To enter this, submitters must be in either 10th or 11th grade. It is sponsored by the Kenyon Review, an extremely prestigious literary magazine. Winners will either receive a full scholarship to the Kenyon Review Young Writers Workshop or have their work published in the next Kenyon Review edition.

Summer Programs

Adroit Summer Mentorship Program

This summer program is an online program presented by The Adroit Journal. In this program, a high school student will be mentored by an esteemed writer. For 2023, the program will be catered towards poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction.

Iowa Young Writers' Studio.JPG

Iowa Young Writers Studio

This is a 2-week Summer Residential Program and 6-week Online Courses. A typical day in the summer program begins with a morning report, then a group writing exercise led by a faculty member. After that, more writing exercises will be held outdoors “to open your eyes and attention to the world around you”. Students may also work with a new teacher during this time.

Juniper Institute

This is an online and in-person program that accepts all high school students. Like the other programs, writers will participate and workshops taught by highly accomplished writers.

Kenyon Review Young Writers Workshop

This program includes a Summer Residential Workshop, Summer Online Workshop, and Winter Online Workshop. The residential workshop takes place at Kenyon College in Ohio.

Sewanee Young Writers Conference

This program accepts all high school students. They offer workshops in poetry, fiction, songwriting, memoir journalism, fantasy, and science fiction. These workshops are taught by established writers.

The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards

Offers a wide range of categories for students including poetry, critical essays, fiction, and more! Students can receive awards, publications, and scholarships. For students in grades 7-12 from the US and Canada. Opens for entries on September 1st and closes between December and January, depending on your region.

Virginia B. Ball Creative Writing  Scholarship Competition

Students in grades 8-11 are eligible to apply for this competition. Submissions must cover at least two genres: Poetry, fiction, memoir, screenplay, playwright, hybrid genre, experimental writing, and /or comics. The winner will earn a full-tuition scholarship at the Interlochen Arts Academy.

YoungArts' National Arts Competition

Offers categories of creative nonfiction, novel, play or script, poetry, short story, and spoken word. Student winners can receive awards up to $10,000 as get the chance to participate in artistic development with leaders in their fields.
