What is HASST and Why is it Important?

From BeHASSTic - https://www.behasstic.org/

HASST stands for the humanities, arts, social sciences, and technology, and encompasses a wide range of academic disciplines that examine human society and encourage creativity and innovation. The four core HASST disciplines are:

Humanities: the study of human culture and society. Examples include history, philosophy, and languages.

Arts: all forms of expression, interpretation, and representation of human creativity, skill, and imagination. Examples include music, art, theater, and dance.

Social Sciences: the study of societies and how people behave and influence the world around them.

Technology: the application of scientific knowledge for achieving practical goals of human life

HASST is important for many reasons. First of all, it offers students a well-rounded education. By integrating the HASST subjects together, students can deepen their understanding of who we are, where we come from, and what it takes to become a global citizen amid technological advancements in an increasingly digital world. Through their understanding of diverse cultures, values, and perspectives, students are able to communicate effectively in many different contexts.

Second, these subjects teach students important soft skills such as effective communication, teamwork, creative thinking, and emotional intelligence that are crucial for later professional success. An MIT study in partnership with Indian garment manufacturer Shahi Exports, Private Limited, found that a 12-month soft skills training program for their employees delivered substantial returns, returning roughly 250% on investment within eight months of the program’s conclusion. Employees recognize the importance of soft skills. A 2016 survey found that 93% of employers believed soft skills were “essential” or “very important” when making hiring decisions. Companies can teach technical knowledge, but they do not always possess the ability to teach employees vital soft skills.

Third, the humanities and arts foster critical-thinking and self-expression. In combination with the social sciences and technology, students are able to become more innovative problem-solvers who aren't afraid to think outside the box. Through their willingness to explore novel ideas and possibilities, students are able to address and solve different and complex challenges in the real world.

In short, HASST provides students with a well-rounded education, teaching students about various aspects of human society and culture in a technology-driven world along with soft skills that are critical for becoming global citizens and achieving career success.
